In my opinion you need to first figure out what metrics will be meaningful for measuring the
purchasing organization’s impact on their goals .
Then create rewards that encourage people to care about the metrics.
These don’t have to be monetary. Recognition, career-growth, influence
and even something as simple as a preferred parking space can be very
powerful motivators.

Very strong site according to me.........

I think the best way to encourage employees to give their best is to set objectives for them and the individuals should take responsibility. Motivate them to take ownership of a particular task and they will become accountable to themselves, One more thing which we need to keep in mind is the efficiency and interest of employees in a particular task. If a person is happy from the work he is doing only then he can do it in a better way. |

Average" isn't good enough any more. Not in this competitive environment. Not in this lagging economy. If you accept average performance from your employees, you're doing your company a huge disservice. The good news is you can kill two birds with one stone. Research has shown that when you start vigorously managing your weakest employees, it makes the biggest impact on your next group up--namely, your average workers. There are a number of ways to manage poorly performing employees. Start by creating job descriptions and performance standards for everyone--a step many small employers wrongly overlook. The best way to succeed is for a leader to figure out how to get the best from everyone and how to prevent employees from prematurely giving up. The basic prescription is for leaders to produce a culture that has ability to extract relevant information from its data and transform it into usable knowledge. This ability requires that people of the organization become iteratively smarter so they know what new information they should gather, how it relates to other information on hand, and what implications are.

employees have individual differences and personal issues at home - understanding people without invading into their privacy and being empathetic could be helpful, visiting their home once a while. walking around and saying hello to employees and how their day has been, inviting suggestions from the employee, promptly appreciating work well done celebrating the performance in presence of colleagues or a word well uttered, sorting out personal grievances in time with empathy, not treating people as members on the attendance register but treating them as people with ideas and emotions with personalised empathy and counsel with interest in their well-being, performance and growth.

Well said Kshantaram, personal touch and appreciation definitely works and at times does wonder. Small things like remembering someone’s birthday, anniversary or any other important occasion means a lot to that person.
Small get together organized, can also do wonder. In some countries monthly outings are organized for the employees and their families which includes camping trips, movies etc.
One of the advantages of such outings are that we get to meet other people from the organization, someone with whom we are not very familiar and get to know them better, which can result in exchange of ideas and thoughts.
Another advantage is that when people come back from these outings they are full of energy and sweet memories, which they have shared with colleagues and family members.
Some one long time back had once told me, that to be a good manager you should understand the place where your employees are working and the condition in which they are working, make it a habit to go to their work station and talk to them, instead of calling them to your cabin. This solves some other purpose also, when you go to someone’s cabin, you pass others and they are aware of your presence, you get a feel of the work environment in progress, and of course you get a bit of exercise.

Entrepreneurs are empowered to perform and tasks and utilize any
processes needed to get the job done. They loath overhead (the dreaded
bureaucrat’s empire) and always try to do the most with the least.
Foster this spirit and your department’s profile, results and
reputation with the company will flourish. And your empowered, engaged
employees will surprise you with their positive attitudes and
creativity.

Yes, a culture of enterpreneurship is most important for get best of any employee. Employees should take ownership and this is possbile only if employers are broad minded and involves employees in small and big decisions.

One of the key challenge which I identify today is to align a team with the organizations goal and creating mechanism to stay focused all the time. This also essentially involves aligning our personal success definitions with company’s growth strategies. This alignment is not only needed within the marketing, Sales or a finance team but alignment is required even between departments with the organizations goals. According to the CSO insight reports nearly 6-10% of revenue is lost because of this misalignment. For a 1000 crore group this stands out at 60-100 crore a year. This misalignment of teams exist every where even in the top notch market leader companies in their segment. The other very important factor in hindering team alignment is lack of uniform metrics and effective systems & processes to measure performance and outcome of a task.
If you don’t agree with me then you can just survey any company in the market place today and find out
Is it the advertising, is it the small scale seminar, is it the exhibitions or trade show participation or is it the telemarketing, and which one we can stop doing because they produce low returns. & similar type of questions
You will be amazed to know how many people don’t know answers to these questions and what type of people don’t know the answers. |

I've heard him talk about planes and he is INCREDIBLY terrified of them. So you could come up with quite a movie about a bus crash and I think he'd still be afraid ....

I think, with the most advanced productivity tools on the market, it’s hard to
get bored. This is particularly true of top performers, who typically
embrace continuous change and adoption of new capabilities. SAS’
philosophy on the subject sums it up best: help staff do their best
work, keep them intellectually engaged, and remove distractions.
Evolving technology and processes certainly helps on all 3 fronts.

Generally employees are not made the part of decision making process. They dont even know what is happening around in the company until some head honcho sends a mail informing about some business decision. I would rather appreciate if company solicits comments/suggestions from its employees about a particular business decisions and I am sure decision making board will be over whelmed with the different perspectives and varied view points and who knows some idea may click some way and help in getting more business. Moreover an employee, will eventually feel to be part of the organisation and will value its association with more responsibility. this also helps in increasing the association span of the employee with the company. Acknowledgement is also very important. Employees should be acknowledged for their work and contribution to the organisation which will make them feel that "yes company cares about me and values my part in its success". This positive attitude will encourage him to be more effective. And I also agree with Rohit's point of developing entrepreneurship culture. |

Whatever is the job to be performed people involved in it have certain role to play. Make them realize that they are not bound to work because they get paid but make them partner of the work that is to be accomplished. Self realization and involvement has no replacement. |
