Dear friends, everyone knows the growth story of Telecom industry. With 300 million telephone subscribers today, India now boasts of having the second largest telecom network in the world after China. The country is adding some 8.5 million to 10 million new mobile subscribers to the network every month to also emerge as one of the fastest growing telecom markets in the world.

But now it seems that the Indian Telecom space may not remain the same in the near future. So, according to you, what shall it do to sustain itself?

Applications and Telecom convergence

idea posted by Inder Monga Partner/Principal/VP

Telecom services embedded in Applications. One example I have mentioned before is the Kindle - it is an e-Reader that has cellular service pre-integrated with the device. The user does not have to deal with a service provider or pay separate bills. You pay one time and get service for "life" i.e. till the duration the device works.

The Indian telecom industry needs to do similar things within the indian context and for applications that benefit both the businessmen and the bottom of the pyramid.

I think for Innovation we need to recognize the market nerve. Innovation can turned into good margins only when it can be used widely or among masses ,We cann't sell ideas just because it is great and contains a lot of technical complexities....

In today's trend we can see Innovation everywhere,to point out few areas:

1.We are all well aware how green energy services in Telecom is coming into picture

2. Managed Services,Operators brought this idea to shed off their load

3. Few years back we are worried about the limitation in radio bandwiddth, now we have innovate so high in this area that we are worrying about the servers whether they can support such high radio bandwidth. Innovation will be required in this area

4. 3G,MNP,VPN,MultiVendor,Enterprise Telecom services,VAS ..we are going to see innovation everywhere

But I am convinced by "Inder" that applications embedded with Telecom will bring a lot margins as these kind of innovations never have an end.I think Buissiness Intelligence Tools/ASR will also come in the same subject.

Ink Technology is a well example...From the last 3-4 days I was thinking whether I can think of any single idea and also keeping in mind that if it can be used by masses, and some weird thoughts which comes in mind....(Disclaimer:I don't know about technical feasibility and neither I m sure whether these are implemented already):

Theft detective system : Let's say if we can put a device inside our house which will keep on capturing inside house images and let's say any image change that device automatically sends us an sms .....

Locate your child : Location based Services can be used smartly. To keep all loation based data for any opeartor is a nightmare but Operators can give a provision to parents that they can configure 4-5 areas for which parents need a track. Now for example when a child reaches school, an automatic sms will be sent to parent mobile.

Stock Trading via USSD kind of service

Some application for cricket lover as we can get a large mass there

Visual phone for impaired people....A deaf person can read in the screen what other party is speaking

Sonal, you are absolutely right. The interesting thing is that they have made a deal with Sprint to provide cellular data access to all Kindles so people may download ebooks, epapers anytime - even on airports. Unlike cell phones or other cellular data services, the people who buy Kindle do not need to deal with Sprint at all - no two bills to pay, or contracts to manage. They have lifetime cellular service and Amazon manages the payments/contracts with Sprint. This kind of combination is what makes Kindle exciting from a telecom perspective. If applications now come bundled with lifetime telecom service, that creates for new revenue stream for the telecom providers as well as new ways for application/device providers to sell their "always-on" mobile service. For example, machines which report back their status to their parent company since they are connected wirelessly where the machines could be construction machinery, or devices at home. Since they do not always send data, it should not cost carriers a whole lot of money. If they can provide this data access for cheap, many devices can get enabled and be "online".

Mr. Inder, one type of Kindle i know is the one released by Amazon company. It weighs 10.3 ounces and uses "electronic ink" technology to mimic paper, with no backlight.Where the screen is black and white, There, the E Ink, which manufactures the screen technology for Kindle as well as for other e-book readers like the Sony Reader, has a prototype of a color display.
Its battery last several days to a week, and, it will hold about 200 books.

Its all i know about the device. Can you tell me something more about the device ?

Wireless end links with Fibre Optic back bone is the future.

idea posted by Abraham Paul Owner

Like I mentioned in my different postings in this space, the future of India Telecom is in integrated network with Terabits capacity OF backbone and advanced technology wireless systems for the following reasons:-

Multifarious Convergence is happening in every sphere viz;

a) Convergence of Telecom & IP:-  MPLS, VoIP, Data based e-banking, e-ticketing, video on demand, e-learning etc

b) Convergence of Wired and Wireless Networking:- PON & EPON with WiFi / WiMax end links.

c) Convergence of Bearer and carrier for transport. SMS, USSD, UUS, Data, and Real time streaming of Voice + Video  over  GSM/GPRS /WCDMA/GPS.

d) Convergence of Products, services and utilities:- Phone, Internet, TV and Multi-media products on one single common connectivity.

e) Convergence of Devices:- A single user end device that can cater for multiple products, the difference will be only in the type and size of the device depends on where it used and how it is connected to the network.

f) Convergence of Portability:- A common device and access method that can be used anywhere, home, Vehicles, office and virtually from any where in any service provider network.

g) Convergence of Service provision and Network operation by common network and systems shared by large number of service providers.

There is no point in clamoring over 3G spectrums.  The entire spectrum including that in the Ku band being asked to vacate by defense, will not be enough to cater for the type of growth India is poised for in the next 10 years.   Laying and putting through hundreds of terabit capacity OF networks across the country is the solution.

Railway can contribute in this area with the revived of RailTel project in providing OF connectivity across urban, rural and sparsely inhabited and border areas across the country. The network could be used for Railway GSM,  networking of Crisis / Disaster Management system, Unique National ID project, National Education Project networking etc.

An integrated scheme has to be prepared by various stake holders and coordinated implementation done with Private participation is the need of the day.

Please read my posting on Convergence of Wired & Wireless Networks, Limitation in 3G etc. in this space.

Thank you sir for this nice insight. Even i see our industry is going towards that direction

Innovate!! Innovate!! innovate!!

idea posted by Sumit Jayaswal Associate/Sr. Associate -(Technical)

India might be a big market in telecom domain. But one thing it lacks is innovation. The ideas are perculated down to us as offshore projects. Why cant the projects come from india. There is tremendous scope for VoIP, but who is taking the risk. Not even that,Indians are the one who are taking the iniciative outside INdia in telecom domain. Why??? because here in India, the comapnies do not have the bandwidth or the courage to invest into Research. There is a lot of potential to come up with and to do interesting innovative stuff, but what it lacks is probably bandwidth.

moreover, the mentality in india is different when it comes to telecom - i am mainly taking about the user perspective. Change is something everyone is averted to. I would say, you leave your normal telephone and switch over to VoIP. Not many people will be technologically advanced to think on these lines.

SO i would say that Innovation will come in telecom industry only when the people kin india will be open to change and to Take risk.

Finding out the business intelligence tools

idea posted by Abdul Raheem.Syed Technical Lead-QA

Finding out the business intelligence tools will help in assessing/evaluating the performance and it may give the pointers on the significant development to be done to improve the revenues. The main aim of these utilities should be to show the weak areas.

Growth in wireless industry

idea posted by Sonal Singh Project Manager

The challenge for On mobile is to constantly create local, relevant and innovative content. Inability to innovate new solutions that are accepted by the market could affect its future growth. The company's revenue is subject to uncertainties that are beyond its control, such as market acceptance of its application services by end-user subscribers, subscriber churn rate, the pricing of services, product placement and marketing and promotion activities conducted by its customers.

With the Indian wireless telecom industry exhibiting robust growth and telecom operators searching for diversified revenue streams, the stage is set for OnMobile to benefit from innovative VAS solutions and helping telecom operators gain a larger share of the consumer spend.

Automatic Speech Recognition

idea posted by PRABHU P Software Developer

I am sure the emerging technology of Automatic Speech Recognition over telephone or mobile(embedded) will rock in coming several decade of years... This ASR will perform everywhere in the entire world in future not only in Telecommunication. This technology soon will work all major languages in India. Also already in market. In future everything will be in speech only.. like as Human and machine interaction.
